GTA REALTORS® Continue To Help Build Communities With Habitat For Humanity

TORONTO, November 25, 2011 Greater Toronto REALTORS® are celebrating the start of this holiday season by helping to make the dream of home ownership a reality for one local family.

On November 25th and December 1st, 2nd, 8th and 9th Greater Toronto REALTORS® are taking part in the construction of a Habitat for Humanity home that the Toronto Real Estate Board (TREB) has sponsored.

Located at 4572 Kingston Road near Morningside Avenue, the home marks the fourth title sponsorship of seven Habitat for Humanity builds to which TREB has contributed in recent years.

“As REALTORS® we recognize that a home is more than just bricks and mortar: It serves as a retreat from our busy world, a place where friends and family gather, and where memories are made,” said TREB President Richard Silver. “We’re thrilled to be playing a key role in improving the quality of life for another local family, not just through sponsorship but by volunteering to take part in their home’s construction.”

In recent years TREB also sponsored Habitat for Humanity homes in Scarborough’s McLevin Woods and Etobicoke’s Lakeshore Village. The organization, which constructs simple, decent and affordable housing in partnership with low-income families has built more than 225 homes throughout the city, and has set a goal to build 50 new homes each year by 2015.

“By offering a hand up to families in need, Habitat for Humanity is helping to build a better Toronto, which is a goal that we as Greater Toronto REALTORS® share,” said Mr. Silver.

Each year, Toronto Real Estate Board Members contribute to the overall quality of life in the Greater Toronto Area by supporting shelter-related charities through the REALTORS® Care Foundation. Last year it offered grants totaling more than $178,000 to 35 different organizations throughout the GTA.

“The holidays are a time of year when many people’s thoughts turn to helping those less fortunate,” said Mr. Silver. “I encourage everyone to contribute their time or their financial resources to the GTA’s many shelter-related related organizations because doing so benefits us all.”

Social Housing in Toronto Being Renovated

Author: Toronto Real Estate Admin / Category: News Bulletin

Canada ontario

TORONTO, ON, August 31, 2009 — The Government of Canada and the Province of Ontario today announced that three social housing projects in the City of Toronto will receive support for repairs and renovations over the next two years.

Repairs will include the replacement of windows and balconies, installation of energy efficient lights and carbon monoxide sensors and the replacement of appliances in the following buildings:

  • Les Centres d’Accueil Heritage at 33 Hahn Place, $1.1 million.
  • Toronto Community Housing Corporation at 30 and 40 Teesdale Place, $2 million.
  • Mimico Co-op at 1 Summerhill Road, $403,300.

The $3.5 million investment is part of a notional allocation of more than $220 million for the City of Toronto to repair and retrofit existing local social housing units over the next two years.

The funding was made available as a result of a $1.2 billion joint investment under the amended Canada – Ontario Affordable Housing Program Agreement, which includes funding through Canada’s Economic Action Plan and by the Government of Ontario. The federal and provincial governments are contributing equally to this overall investment.

Lois Brown, Member of Parliament for Newmarket – Aurora, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) and George Smitherman, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure and Member of Provincial Parliament for Toronto Centre, on behalf of the Honourable Jim Watson, Ontario Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, made the announcement today.

“This funding will improve the quality of life for residents by upgrading their homes and keeping them affordable,” said MP Brown. “These investments also benefit our communities by creating jobs and supporting the local economy.”

“These repairs are another step towards improving social housing in Toronto,” said MPP Smitherman. “This new funding will help ensure that people living in social housing have a safe and reliable place to live. Ontarians deserve nothing less.”

“This is very good news for the City of Toronto and is in keeping with our efforts to create a city that is liveable and prosperous for all residents,” said Toronto Mayor David Miller. “Through Council’s Housing Opportunities Toronto Action Plan, we will continue to work with Provincial and Federal partners in order to continue to upgrade and improve housing in the city.”

Ontario is moving quickly to invest a total of $704 million to repair eligible social housing across the province. In an effort to get shovels in the ground quickly, projects must be committed by the end of the fiscal years 2010 and 2011.

The funding will help improve the quality of life for residents living in social housing communities. Funding will be used to renovate and make energy-saving upgrades to existing social housing as well as to undertake accessibility modifications for the benefit of seniors and persons with disabilities. It will also create jobs and strengthen local economies. To find out more about affordable housing in Ontario, visit www.mah.gov.on.ca.

Last fall, the Government of Canada committed more than $1.9 billion over the next five years to improve and build new affordable housing and to help the homeless. Canada’s Economic Action Plan builds on this with an additional one-time investment of more than $2 billion over two years in new and existing social housing and lending of up to another $2 billion to municipalities for housing-related infrastructure.

Last month, the Government of Canada and the Province of Ontario, announced a series of investments of more than $76.5 million to fund 39 construction-ready projects throughout the province under the amended Canada – Ontario Affordable Housing Program Agreement.

STONEY CREEK, ON, August 27, 2009 — The Government of Canada, the Government of Ontario, and the City of Hamilton through CityHousing Hamilton Corporation today celebrated the start of construction of 48 new affordable rental units in Stoney Creek. The project received more than $3.3 million in funding through the Canada – Ontario Affordable Housing Program.

Dean Allison, Member of Parliament for Niagara West – Glanbrook, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation; Sophia Aggelonitis, MPP for Hamilton Mountain, on behalf of the Honourable Jim Watson, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing; and Mayor of Hamilton, Fred Eisenberger, made the announcement today.

“The Government of Canada is committed to making affordable housing available in Ontario and across Canada for those who need it most,” said MP Allison. “These new housing units will provide more rental options for residents in need of suitable, affordable housing, and are important to the economic and social well-being of the Stoney Creek community.”

“Access to affordable, quality housing is very important to Hamilton-area families,” said MPP Aggelonitis. “I am very proud that the provincial and federal governments have joined together to help build Bridgewater Court, a true community initiative that will make a positive impact on the lives of many families in our area.”

Today’s announcement recognized a 48-unit building in Stoney Creek. The project, currently under construction, will provide affordable housing for low-income individuals and families, persons with disabilities and recent immigrants. Completion of the homes is scheduled for April 2010. This $6.5 million project, sponsored by the CityHamilton Housing Corporation, received more than $3.3 million under the Canada – Ontario Affordable Housing Program.

The federal and provincial allocations to the project were complemented by a contribution of $3 million from the City of Hamilton. In addition, the province donated the land to the City of Hamilton for development purposes.

”I am very pleased that the people of Hamilton will soon have increased options for affordable housing at the new Bridgewater affordable housing project,” said Fred Eisenberger, Mayor of Hamilton. “This project is an excellent example of public partnerships working for the benefit of individuals and families and we look forward to even more successful collaborations in future that will help us meet the needs of our residents.”

The Canada – Ontario Affordable Housing Program comprises a commitment of $301 million from each of the two senior levels of government. In total, the federal, provincial and municipal governments will invest at least $734 million in the program, which will provide affordable housing for up to 20,000 households in Ontario.

Combined for Ontario, this means a further $1.2 billion joint investment under the amended Canada – Ontario Affordable Housing Program Agreement. The federal and provincial governments are contributing equally to this overall investment.

Ontario is moving quickly to implement this additional funding, which increases the number of quick start projects to 39 totaling over $76.5 million and which will improve access to affordable housing for low-income families, seniors and persons with disabilities. It will also create jobs and strengthen local economies. To find out more about affordable housing in Ontario, visit www.mah.gov.on.ca.

GTA REALTORS® ROLL-OUT ViRTUAL OFFICE WEBSITE SERVICE

TORONTO, November 24, 2011 Toronto Real Estate Board GTA REALTOR®
Members now have the opportunity to enhance the portfolio of services they
currently offer their consumer clients to include a Virtual Office Website
(VOW).

In response
to a changing business environment, TREB embarked on the development of a VOW
policy and service back in July 2010, and is pleased to announce that it has followed
through on its commitment. A Virtual Office Website (“VOW”) service is
now available for TREB REALTOR® Members.

A VOW
service allows REALTORS® to offer consumers a secure password-protected website
to search MLS® listing data, with the benefit of a REALTOR® Member’s knowledge and
accountability, without compromising MLS® accuracy or consumers’ privacy
rights.

REALTOR®
clients would have the ability to access information fields of much richer
substance than that seen on REALTOR.ca.

“All of our
efforts are driven by the needs of our Members and the clients they serve,”
said Toronto Real Estate Board President Richard Silver. “TREB will continue to
work on behalf of consumers and the REALTORS® who represent them to ensure the
highest quality of safe and secure service to the Greater Toronto real estate
market’s thousands of consumers.

Consumers
who engage in this type of service with their REALTOR® could use access to this
additional information to determine preferences and “must haves” to aid in
their home buying and selling decisions.

However, contrary to demands by
the Competition Commissioner for TREB to release private data about individual
consumers openly on the internet, TREB remains committed to its belief that doing
so would violate consumer privacy laws, reduce the quality of the system, and
diminish protection for consumers.

TREB will not violate its REALTOR®
Members contractual and legal obligations to protect the private information of
their clients.

“The new VOW service
that has resulted from the comprehensive planning process strikes the right
balance while offering richer information to our Members to better serve their
clients,” concluded Mr. Silver.

Importance of affordable housing solutions recognized on National Housing Day

Author: Toronto Real Estate Admin / Category: Toronto Realtor

Importance of affordable housing solutions recognized on National Housing Day

TORONTO, November 22, 2011 Greater Toronto REALTORS®, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), Habitat for Humanity Toronto and the City of Toronto’s Affordable Housing Office are encouraging Canadians to join in the discussion about the importance of affordable housing in our communities this National Housing Day, November 22nd.

“Quality affordable housing options are needed in neighbourbourhoods throughout the Greater Toronto Area because the opportunity to build a better life is what makes our communities vibrant places to live, work and grow,” said Toronto Real Estate Board President Richard Silver.

While the four organizations pursue distinct mandates, all share the belief that implementing affordable housing solutions requires partnerships at all levels.

“It takes government, industry, non-profit organizations and the private sector working together to advance affordable housing solutions and to make projects happen right across the country,” said Peter Friedmann, General Manager, Ontario Region and Managing Director, Securitization, CMHC.

This year, CMHC will direct $2 billion in federal funds toward improving the quality of life for Canadians in a number of target groups through affordable housing initiatives.

“For more than 90 years Greater Toronto REALTORS® have been helping the people of our city turn the dream of home ownership into reality by advising them as to affordable solutions, including various government programs that make their goals more easily attainable,” said Mr. Silver.

Greater Toronto REALTORS® also contribute to those less fortunate, through the REALTORS® Care Foundation, which provides annual grants to shelter-related charities throughout the province. Last year alone REALTORS Care Foundation grants totaling $178,710 were distributed to the 35 local organizations on behalf of all Greater Toronto REALTORS®.

One of the recipients of the foundation’s grants is Habitat for Humanity Toronto, a charity dedicated to building simple, decent and affordable housing in partnership with low-income families in the City of Toronto.

“When we partner together – be it with families, corporations, other charitable organizations or the City, we are able to build more affordable homes at a fraction of the cost. When we partner together, we are proclaiming the belief that we can build a better city, and better lives for families living in need,” said Neil Hetherington, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Toronto.

To date, Habitat for Humanity Toronto has built over 225 affordable homes in the city of Toronto, and thanks in large part to its partnerships with individuals, corporations and the City of Toronto, they have set the ambitious goal to build 50 new homes each year by 2015.

The City’s Affordable Housing Office works with governments and housing stakeholders to support housing solutions for Toronto residents.

“Affordable housing contributes to Toronto’s vitality through job creation and economic stimulus. That’s why it’s important to encourage people to engage in discussion and action around affordable housing opportunities,” said Sean Gadon, Director of the Affordable Housing Office.

CMHC has been Canada’s national housing agency for more than 65 years. CMHC is committed to helping Canadians access a wide choice of quality, environmentally sustainable, affordable housing solutions, while making vibrant, healthy communities and cities a reality across the country.

Canada’s Economic Action Plan builds on this with an additional one-time investment of more than $2 billion over two years in new and existing social housing and lending of up to another $2 billion to municipalities for housing-related infrastructure. Combined for Ontario, this means a further $1.2-billion joint investment under the amended Canada – Ontario Affordable Housing Program Agreement. The federal and provincial governments are contributing equally to this overall investment.

Ontario is moving quickly to implement this additional funding, which increases the number of “quick start” projects to 39 totaling over $76.5 million and which will improve access to affordable housing for low-income families, seniors and persons with disabilities. It will also create jobs and strengthen local economies. To find out more about affordable housing in Ontario, visit www.mah.gov.on.ca.
