PRESCOTT AND RUSSELL, June 30, 2009 — The Government of Canada, the Province of Ontario and the United Counties of Prescott and Russell today announced $140,000 to fund a construction-ready project in Clarence – Rockland.

The funding was made available as a result of a $1.2 billion joint investment under the amended Canada – Ontario Affordable Housing Program Agreement, which includes funding through Canada’s Economic Action Plan and by the Government of Ontario. The federal and provincial governments are contributing equally to this overall investment.

Today’s announcement recognized the successful application by Rockland Housing Corporation to add two units of affordable housing to a six-unit Clarence – Rockland project for seniors.

Pierre Lemieux, Member of Parliament for Glengarry – Prescott – Russell, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) and Jean-Marc Lalonde, Member of Provincial Parliament for Glengarry – Prescott – Russell, on behalf of the Honourable Jim Watson, Ontario Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, along with Robert Kirby, Warden of the United Counties of Prescott and Russell made the announcement today.

“This Government is working hard to support Canadians during these challenging economic times and we are moving aggressively to ensure Canada’s Economic Action Plan is implemented rapidly,” said MP Lemieux. “We are helping the most vulnerable, including seniors and persons with disabilities, access suitable, affordable housing, as well as making needed renovations to existing social housing both in Ontario and across Canada.”

“New housing initiatives add significant support to the McGuinty government’s Poverty Reduction Strategy,” said MPP Lalonde. “This first wave of funding will lead to construction by September and we will continue to work with our municipal partners to ensure more units are built during the life of this program.”

“We are here to celebrate additional funding to the Rockland Non-Profit Housing Corporation under the new Rental Housing and Support component, Wave 2 of the Affordable Housing Program,” said Warden Robert Kirby. “We are very pleased to know that the Prescott and Russell population will benefit from this funding, which will serve to provide housing for our low-income seniors and persons with disabilities for years to come.”

Ontario is moving quickly to implement this new funding, which will improve access to affordable housing for seniors and persons with disabilities. It will also create jobs and strengthen local economies. To learn more about affordable housing in Ontario, visit www.mah.gov.on.ca.
