TWEED, ON, June 12, 2009 — The Government of Canada, the Government of Ontario, and Hastings County today celebrated the creation of two affordable housing units in the Village of Tweed. The project is supported by $140,000 in funding under the Canada – Ontario Affordable Housing Program.

Daryl Kramp, Member of Parliament for Prince Edward – Hastings, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada, and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation; Leona Dombrowsky, Member of Provincial Parliament for Prince Edward-Hastings, and Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, on behalf of the Honourable Jim Watson, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing; Jo-Anne Albert, Reeve of the Municipality of Tweed; Ron Emond, Hastings County Warden; and affordable housing sponsors Chris Zavos and Adam Zegouras attended the event.

“The Government of Canada is committed to creating safe and affordable housing for lower-income individuals in Ontario and across the country,” said MP Daryl Kramp. “This project provides access to quality housing at an affordable cost.”

“The McGuinty government is committed to working together with our partners to increase the supply of affordable housing here in Tweed,” said MPP Dombrowsky. “For many people living on fixed or low incomes, these apartments are their opportunity for safe, affordable homes.”

Today’s announcement recognized the ribbon-cutting of a 2-unit project in Tweed. The project is sponsored by developers Chris Zavos and Adam Zegouras and received $140,000 under the Canada – Ontario Affordable Housing Program. The units will be occupied by low-income individuals.

“Hastings County is pleased to have been a partner in ensuring more affordable housing for our residents,” said Warden Emond. “There continues to be an urgent need for affordable housing in Hastings County, and the opening of these two new units will definitely encourage those who remain on our waiting lists for affordable housing.”

The Canada – Ontario Affordable Housing Program comprises a commitment of $301 million from each of the two senior levels of government. In total, the federal, provincial and municipal governments will invest at least $734 million in the program, which will provide affordable housing for up to 20,000 households in Ontario.

Last fall, the Government of Canada committed more than $1.9 billion over the next five years to improve and build new affordable housing and to help the homeless. Canada’s Economic Action Plan builds on this with an additional one-time investment of more than $2 billion over two years in new and existing social housing and lending of up to another $2 billion to municipalities for housing-related infrastructure.
