BURLINGTON, January 23, 2009 — The Government of Canada, the Government of Ontario and the Region of Halton are pleased to announce the construction of Bonnie Place II, an affordable housing development under the Canada – Ontario Affordable Housing Program located at 510 Claridge Road in Burlington.

The $15.6 million, 83-unit project is sponsored by Bonnie Place and received a total of $5.32 million for 76 units for people living on low incomes.

“The Government of Canada is committed to making affordable housing available in Ontario and across Canada for those who need it most,” said Mike Wallace, Member of Parliament for Burlington, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development. “The creation of these units here in Burlington will provide seniors, family and singles access to safe affordable and quality housing, helping them to build a stronger future.”

“Our government is committed to helping people who live on lower or fixed incomes stay in their home communities,” said Kevin Flynn, MPP for Oakville, on behalf of the Honourable Jim Watson, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. “This project will make it easier for individuals in the Burlington area to find a place to call home.”

Federal and provincial allocations to the project will be complemented by more than $1.63 million in regional financial incentives.

“Affordable housing is vital to creating a healthy community,” said Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr. “It is important that we continue to work together with the Federal and Provincial Government so we can create a mix of housing types and affordability levels for Halton residents of all incomes and stages of life.”

“As a long standing housing provider with more than 40 years of service in the community, we are proud of this project which is targeted to be completed in early 2010,” said Bob Bosworth, President of Bonnie Place and member of the Rotary Club of Burlington.

A total of seven Rotary Club members sit on the Bonnie Place Board of Directors along with a representative from the Knox Presbyterian United Church and another from CIBC Wood Gundy.

The Canada – Ontario Affordable Housing Program comprises a commitment of $301 million from each of the two senior levels of government. In total, the federal, provincial and municipal governments will invest at least $734 million in the program, which will provide affordable housing for 20,000 households in Ontario.
