Governments of Canada and Ontario Celebrate New Affordable Housing in Brampton – Chapelview

BRAMPTON, ON, December 3, 2010 — The Government of Canada, the Government of Ontario, the Region of Peel and the City of Brampton celebrated the official opening of 200 affordable rental units at Chapelview. The project is supported by $5.8 million in funding through the Canada – Ontario Affordable Housing Program.
David Tilson, Member of Parliament for Dufferin – Caledon, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), Linda Jeffrey, Member of Provincial Parliament for Brampton – Springdale, on behalf of the Honourable Rick Bartolucci, Ontario’s Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, along with Emil Kolb, Peel Regional Chair, and Susan Fennell, Mayor of Brampton, made the announcement.
“Our government is committed to giving a hand-up to those who need it most here in Brampton and across Ontario,” said MP Tilson. “We are proud to have invested in these new units for seniors and individuals living on low income, helping to provide safe, affordable housing for years to come.”
“This week our government announced Ontario’s Long Term Affordable Housing Strategy which will address the unique needs to individuals and communities by building a strong foundation,” said Linda Jeffrey, MPP for Brampton – Springdale. “This project will provide 200 homes for seniors and people with disabilities living in Peel, and supports our plan by putting people first, creating strong partnerships and supporting affordable options and accountability.”
“Chapelview is more than just a new affordable housing development in Peel, it’s a testament to the power of partnerships among all levels of government, the developer and corporate sponsors that made this unique residence possible,” said Regional Chair, Emil Kolb. “I am confident that Chapelview’s success marks a new, more collaborative approach to providing those in need with greater affordable housing options.”
“Chapelview sets a new standard of quality in affordable housing and I am proud of the combined efforts of all those involved to make this housing project a reality,” said Susan Fennell, Mayor of Brampton. “Today, I am pleased to officially welcome the residents of Chapelview to our Brampton community.”
Sponsored by the Region of Peel, Chapelview provides 200 units for seniors and individuals living on low income. Federal, provincial and regional contributions include $5.8 million from the Canada – Ontario Affordable Housing Program and $3.86 million in grant funding from the Region of Peel. In addition, the City of Brampton provided $2.4 million in development fee exemptions, land contributions and almost $9 million to add an underground municipal parking garage.
Located at 16 John Street in Brampton, Chapelview is one of the largest housing projects built in Ontario in the last ten years. The 16-storey residence is working towards achieving Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED-NC) Platinum designation from the Canada Green Building Council for its green building construction and performance features — a first for affordable housing in North America.
The Canada – Ontario Affordable Housing Program Agreement comprises a commitment of $301 million from each of the two senior levels of government. In total, the federal, provincial and municipal governments will invest at least $734 million in the program, which will provide affordable housing for up to 20,000 households in Ontario.
In 2008, the Government of Canada committed more than $1.9 billion over five years to improve and build new affordable housing and to help the homeless. Canada’s Economic Action Plan builds on this with an additional one-time investment of more than $2 billion over two years for the construction of new and the renovation of existing social housing, plus up to $2 billion in low-cost loans to municipalities for housing-related infrastructure. Combined for Ontario, this means a further $1.2 billion joint investment under the amended Canada – Ontario Affordable Housing Program Agreement. The federal and provincial governments are contributing equally to this overall investment.
In 2009, Ontario allocated a combined federal and provincial investment of $704 million for the renovation of social housing, and $540 million for the creation of new affordable housing. This investment is part of the Open Ontario plan, and is creating an estimated 23,000 jobs over the course of the program, while strengthening local economies across the province. To date, Ontario has approved more than $519 million for construction-ready projects, which will provide affordable housing for low-income families, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities, and $525.45 million for repairs benefiting some 173,425 social housing units.
