WINDSOR, ON, August 30, 2011 — The Government of Canada, through Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of renovations at the Well-Come Centre for Human Potential, an 11 bed shelter for women in Windsor.

Jeff Watson, Member of Parliament for Essex, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), and Lady Laforet, Executive Director of the Well-Come Centre for Human Potential, along with invited guests made the announcement.

“Repairing and maintaining quality shelters not only helps build strong and healthy communities but most importantly, it improves the quality of life for residents,” said MP Watson. “Our Government is committed to giving a hand-up to those in need by providing safe, affordable housing that meets their needs.”

The Government of Canada, through CMHC, provided $65,585 to the Well-Come Centre for Human Potential through the Shelter Enhancement Program (SEP).

SEP assists in repairing, rehabilitating and improving existing shelters for women and their children, youth or men who are victims of family violence. It also provides financial assistance for acquisition or construction of new shelters and second-stage housing where needed.

“This new addition has changed the way the Centre operates within our community,” said Lady Laforet, Executive Director of the Well-Come Centre. “Now, Centre clients will be able to meet with workers from our partner agencies on-site. In addition, we’ve been able to make the Centre more accessible for women with disabilities.”

The Well-Come Centre for Human Potential is Windsor-Essex County’s only emergency shelter for women experiencing homeless, and provides emergency shelter services to approximately 400 women annually. In addition to shelter services, the Centre also provides a drop-in program for women who self identify as at-risk for losing housing, and an emergency food bank program for low-income women and their children. The Shelter Enhancement Program funding obtained by the Centre allowed for a 200 square foot addition, along with upgrades to the existing security system and the replacement of many outdated windows throughout the building.

CMHC has been Canada’s national housing agency for more than 65 years. CMHC is committed to helping Canadians access a wide choice of quality, environmentally sustainable, affordable housing solutions, while making vibrant, healthy communities and cities a reality across the country.

In July 2011, federal, provincial and territorial ministers responsible for housing signed a new affordable housing Framework Agreement for the remaining three years of the federal, five year affordable housing commitment of more than $1.9 billion made in September 2008. As part of the 2008 investment, the Affordable Housing Initiative and the federal renovation programs for low-income households were extended for two years, which represented some $160.4 million in federal funding for Ontario.

Canada’s Economic Action Plan builds on this with an additional one-time investment of more than $2 billion to build new and renovate existing social housing for low-income Canadians, plus $2 billion in low-cost loans to municipalities for housing-related infrastructure.
