New Seniors Complex for the Chippewas of Kettle and Stony Point First Nation
Posted by: Toronto Real Estate Admin / Category: News BulletinFOREST, December 7, 2007 — Seniors and disabled adults from the Chippewas of Kettle Stony Point First Nation now have more housing options. Today marks the grand opening of a new housing project in the community which will provide affordable eight-one bed hostel units for seniors and disabled adults in need of homes that offer assisted living.
“The Government of Canada is committed to creating affordable housing for Aboriginal Canadians in Ontario and across the country,” said Bev Shipley, Member of Parliament for Lambton – Kent – Middlesex, on behalf of the Honourable Monte Solberg, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development. “Seniors and persons with disabilities of the Chippewas of Kettle Stony Point will have access to quality, affordable housing and services to meet their specific needs, while allowing them to remain close to their families and friends.”
The seniors complex received a $600,000 federal contribution through Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s (CMHC) Section 95 program. CMHC’s Section 95 is a unique program designed to assist First Nations in the construction, purchase and rehabilitation, and administration of affordable on-reserve rental housing.
Through Indian and Northern Affairs and Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), the federal government is currently providing an estimated $261 million a year to address housing needs on-reserve, which includes housing supply and renovation programming.
“The community appreciates the support it received from CMHC in realizing the construction of our assisted living facility,” said Chief Thomas Bressette. “This will be recognized as a good home for our senior community members that choose to live here. There was a great deal of work by our health staff and Building Committee that deserves recognition as well. Let’s not forget our construction crews either. Hopefully we will see the demand for this type of facility increase in other communities as well. Chii Miigwech, thank you, to all those that helped out if we forgot to mention you.”
The Chippewas of Kettle Stony Point First Nation have been a CMHC client since 1993. The community has 57 social housing units which are funded under CMHC programs.
Earlier this year, the Government of Canada announced the First Nations Market Housing Fund to provide additional financing options to First Nation communities. These are two ways in which this government is working to provide First Nations on-reserve with the same housing opportunities and responsibilities as other Canadians.
