ECHO BAY, August 8, 2007 — A new affordable housing apartment complex providing 10 apartments for low-income seniors officially opened today. The federal and provincial governments, the Algoma District Services Administration Board (ADSAB) and the Township of MacDonald, Meredith and Aberdeen Additional celebrated the official opening of Hurley Haven I at 141 Church Street in Echo Bay.

The announcement was made by the Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Health and Member of Parliament for Parry Sound – Muskoka, on behalf of the Honourable Monte Solberg, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development; the Honourable John Gerretsen, Ontario Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing; Lorraine Aelick, ADSAB Chair; and Lynn Watson, Mayor of the Township of MacDonald, Meredith and Aberdeen Additional.

“Canada’s New Government is committed to creating affordable housing for Canadian seniors,” said Minister Clement. “Affordable housing projects like Hurley Haven will ensure Canada’s seniors are able to retire with the comfort, dignity and independence they deserve.”

“The McGuinty government has made significant progress in building new affordable housing,” said Minister Gerretsen. “I am pleased that all levels of government worked in partnership to help seniors in Echo Bay who need our support.”

The $1.7 million project, which includes $700,000 from the new Canada – Ontario Affordable Housing Program, was sponsored by ADSAB and the Township of MacDonald, Meredith and Aberdeen Additional. ADSAB invested $900,000 in the project and the Township contributed $100,000.

“The ADSAB is pleased to have had the opportunity to participate in this new housing program. This partnership has provided a much needed service.” said ADSAB Chair Lorraine Aelick. “Now seniors have affordable rental housing in their own community.”

“The township has worked a long time to see this building come to fruition,” said Mayor Watson. “We are very pleased that our seniors will be able to stay in their home community.”

The new Canada – Ontario Affordable Housing Program Agreement is a commitment of $301 million from each of the two senior levels of government. In total, the federal, provincial and municipal governments will invest at least $734 million in the program, which will provide affordable housing for some 20,000 households in Ontario.
