President’s Toronto SUN Column: Helping Communities To Build Better Lives

While establishing a wide network of contacts is of course, critical to a successful career in real estate, pitching in stems from a much deeper motivation. Greater Toronto REALTORS® truly care about the wellbeing of the communities in which they live and work, and about our city’s quality of life ranking on the international stage. In fact, typically it is this passion for community from which their interest in real estate originates.
To recognize the difference that they make in neighbourhoods throughout the Greater Toronto Area I will be highlighting local REALTORS’® volunteer activities in this column periodically.
You may know of a REALTOR® like Javaid Ali Khan. He has been contributing to community life in Markham since 1998, volunteering to help with the Milliken Children’s Festival, the Town of Markham’s Canada Day and Race Relations Committees, and fundraising for The Scarborough Hospital and Markham Stouffville Hospital. Institutions around the world like hospitals in Kenya, schools in Bangladesh and orphanages in Sri Lanka have benefited from his tireless work as well.
To acknowledge his many efforts in the community, the Toronto Real Estate Board (TREB) recently presented Javaid with a community service award at a general meeting held as part of its annual REALTOR® QUEST conference. During the same meeting, for the sixth consecutive year, Greater Toronto REALTORS® voted overwhelmingly in favour of participating in the REALTORS Care Foundation’s “Every REALTOR®” program, allowing our professional association to make a donation to the Foundation on behalf of every Greater Toronto REALTOR®. This year’s donation alone will total more than $430,000.
Even if you are not yet familiar with the REALTORS® Care Foundation, you are probably aware of the many causes it supports. Each year, it distributes grants to shelter-related charities throughout the province. In the Greater Toronto Area the Foundation has touched the lives of new immigrants, homeless teens and women and children in transition to name just a few. Funds have also been directed to the construction of Habitat for Humanity homes and to the Children’s Breakfast Program, initiatives in which scores of Greater Toronto REALTORS® have also volunteered their time.
The Toronto Real Estate Board is reaching out for help in shining a spotlight on Greater Toronto REALTORS® who help make a difference.
