PETERBOROUGH, ON, April 13, 2018 — More families, seniors, adults with disabilities and Indigenous people will now have a place to call home in Peterborough, Renfrew County and the surrounding areas. The federal and provincial governments are investing over $10.3 million to create 82 affordable housing units.

The Honourable Maryam Monsef, Minister of Status of Women and Member of Parliament for Peterborough-Kawartha, on behalf of the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), along with the Honourable Jeff Leal, Ontario’s Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and Member of Provincial Parliament for Peterborough, on behalf of the Honourable Peter Milczyn, Ontario’s Minister of Housing and Minister Responsible for the Poverty Reduction Strategy, made the announcement today. Daryl Bennett, Mayor of Peterborough also spoke at the event.

The announcement took place at the official opening of Monaghan Court, at 721 Monaghan Road. The former fire hall was redeveloped to provide 11 units of affordable housing for Indigenous residents.

Other affordable housing developments in Arnprior, Haliburton, Lindsay, Petawawa and Perth were also celebrated at the event.

• 721 Monaghan Road was a City of Peterborough fire hall from the time it was built in 1957 until 2012.
• The governments of Canada and Ontario jointly contributed over $1.6 million to the project through the Investment in Affordable Housing (IAH) agreement.
• The governments of Canada and Ontario have partnered together to deliver the IAH program since 2011. Under the IAH, Ontario and the federal government are investing a total of $1.9 billion to improve access to affordable housing across Ontario.
